Huskies Men's Hoops Win 6th Straight
12/30/2009 - 11:40 AM

What will be the Saint Cloud State men’s basketball team’s New Years resolution this year? How about keep doing what they’re doing. The Huskies closed out 2009 with their sixth straight win as they took down the University of Sioux Falls 78-46 at Halenbeck Hall. SCSU stymied the Sioux Falls offense as they held them to 29 percent shooting and broke a school record with 15 blocks in the game. On the offensive side of the ball the Huskies had four players score in double figures and shot over 50 percent from three point range. Sophomore Brett Putz led the Huskies with 19 points as he shot 5 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Saint Cloud is now 9-2 overall as they wrap up non-conference play. The Northern Sun Conference schedule starts this coming Saturday as the Huskies travel to the state’s capitol to take on the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul. Tip-off for that one is scheduled for 4 pm.
Men's Bball Sweeps/ Women Get Swept
12/14/2009 - 2:20 AM

It was a weekend of sweeps for the Saint Cloud State basketball teams this last weekend but not the one the women's team liked. The women were upended by Minnesota State-Moorehead 74-62 on Friday and then by Minnesota-Crookston 80-61 on Saturday.
The Huskies were lead in scoring both nights by Becca Friestleben who collected 33 points on the weekend and Talisha Barlow also added 24 in the games. Saint Cloud is now 4-5 on the year with a 1-3 mark in the conference as they continue to mature with their young lineup in NSIC play.
The men on the other hand who have 4 of their top 5 scorers back from last season took both games this weekend to improve to 6-2 on the season with a 3-1 record in the conference. Brett Putz, Taylor Witt and Matt Schneck (Sh-neck) continue to contribute each night as the Huskies are still currently ranked in the top 25 in Division II basketball.
Both the men and women are in action at home this Wednesday night while the men follow up with another contest on Thursday.
Colorado College outlasts SCSU
12/14/2009 - 2:05 AM

It was one of the more entertaining games in recent memory on Friday night at the National Hockey Center between Colorado College and Saint Cloud State but it was a letdown on Saturday that will ultimately leave a bad taste in the mouths of the Huskies.
Saint Cloud rallied down 3-0 on Friday night and scored a shorthanded goal by Brian Volpei late in the 3rd period to draw a 4-4 tie with the Tigers. Saint Cloud was down 4-2 in the 3rd until a goal by Garrett Roe drew the Huskies within one. Brian Volpei then ignited the crowd when he came out of the box and stripped a C.C. player with the puck and scored on a breakaway goal.
The Huskies killed off a 5 on 3 power play and a 5 minute major penalty in the 3rd to keep things status quo and eventually drawing the tie.
The emotions unfortunately didn't carry over for the Huskies on Saturday as SCSU was scored on early and often. C.C. scored within the 1st minute of the 1st period and went on to beat the Huskies 4-1.
Saint Cloud still sits at 19th in the nation after the weekend and is off until January 2nd and 3rd when they continue their home stand against Brown University. Both games start at 6:07 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday night and KVSC is providing all of the coverage from this non-conference matchup.
Roberts Joins Century Club in Split
12/13/2009 - 10:10 AM

This past weekend’s women’s hockey series between Saint Cloud State and Ohio State saw a shootout, great goaltending performances, and another Husky joining the 100-point club.
Friday afternoon it was SCSU who struck first as Felicia Nelson netted her tenth goal of the season with a backhand move to beat Buckeye goaltender Chelsea Knapp. Ohio State would score two unanswered goals to make it a 2-1 hockey game before Nelson struck again, this time on the power play. The game would stay knotted up through overtime and Holly Roberts was the lone goal scorer in the shootout and Ashley Nixon turned away all three Buckeye shooters, giving the Huskies the win. Roberts assisted on both of Nelson’s goal so she would stand at 99 career points heading into game two.
Game two between the teams was a different story as it was the Buckeyes jumping out to the early lead. Hokey Langan took a loose puck in the crease and put it past Nixon to make it 1-0 OSU. Natalie Spooner would put Ohio State up 2-0 in the second period with a rebound goal. The Huskies fought back however as Felicia Nelson would net her third goal of the weekend on a laser pass from Roberts on a power play. The assist was Roberts’ 100th career point, becoming only the third Husky to reach the century mark.
Huskies Prepare For Tigers
12/09/2009 - 11:52 AM

Coming off the first sweep of the season last weekend, the St.Cloud State Men's Hockey team is looking to continue its march of the WCHA standings. St.Cloud now ranked 17th in the nation hosts #6 Colorado College this weekend in a pivotal conference matchup.
The Tigers are currently league leaders in power-play and special teams net, along with being one of the best scoring teams in the conference. St.Cloud is looking to combat this with more aggressive defensive play and another strong showing from freshman goalie, Mike Lee. Lee picked up his first road victories of the year against Alaska Anchorage last week after starting both games due to an injury to the other goalie he was splitting time with, in Dan Dunn. Dunn was limited in practice this week and Lee was taking most of the time on the rink. If Lee does start both games, it will be the first time a goalie would have started both games in back to back series this season.
The battle of nationally ranked teams can be heard here on KVSC this weekend with games slated to start at 7:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday nights. Your sound alternative will also be broadcasting the women's games this weekend with a 2:07 p.m. start on Friday and then 1:07 p.m. on Saturday against Ohio State.

12/08/2009 - 1:45 AM

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced that Saint Cloud State junior wrestler John Sundgren has been named wrestler of the week. The Blaine, Minnesota native went undefeated in all three of his matches this past weekend in the Univeristy of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Duals with all three of his victories by pinfall. So far this season Sundgren is 7-2 for the Huskies while wrestling at 157 pounds.
SCSU is 4-2 so far in the 2009-10 campaign and host's the Husky Open wrestling tournament on December 12th at Halenbeck Hall.
Huskies Split with Mavericks
12/08/2009 - 12:45 PM

The Saint Cloud State women's hockey team continued to stay unbeaten in regulation this past weekend as they split with Minnesota State-Mankato this past weekend in a home and home series. Friday night the teams squared off down in Mankato and the score went back and forth and the teams needed extra time to decide a winner as the game went to a shootout. Maverick goalie Alli Altmann stopped all three Husky shooters in the shootout to preserve the 5-4 shootout win.
Saturday the teams faced off in Saint Cloud at the National Hockey Center and it was a defensive battle as the game was scoreless until the third period. SCSU alternate captain Holly Roberts took a Kelly Meierhofer pass and beat Altmann low glove side to put SCSU up 1-0 and thats where it would end. Husky goaltender Ashley Nixon made 32 saves for her 4th career shutout.
The Huskies are now 8-9-1 overall and 5-8-1 in the WCHA. This weekend they will try to move up the standings as they take on Ohio State University at the National Hockey Center. Puck drop on Friday is at 2:07 and Saturday face-off is slated for 1:07 p.m. Both of those games can be heard on 88.1 FM KVSC with Matt Bishop, Joe Clemence and Zack Fisch having the call.
SCSU's Nelson is Player of Week
12/02/2009 - 2:00 AM

For the third straight week, a St. Cloud State women’s hockey player has garnered player of the week honors; this time it's senior captain Felicia Nelson. The St. Paul native had three goals and an assist against Brown this past weekend, including the game-winning goal in both games.
Nelson now holds the school record for career game-winning goals with ten. After missing the first three games of the season, Nelson has been on fire since her return, posting 12 points in 13 games played. The Huskies will take on Minnesota-State Mankato this weekend in a home and home series as they try to extend their season-high three game winning streak.

12/02/2009 - 11:15 AM

USA Hockey has announced the preliminary 29-man roster for the World Junior Championships and a familiar name to Husky fans is on the list, freshman goaltender Mike Lee. The Roseau native is one of two goalies on the roster, along with Jack Campbell, who currently plays for the US National Developmental Team. Lee has been as good as advertised for St. Cloud State this year, posting a 2-4-2 record with a 2.60 goals-against-average and a 91 percent save percentage so far in his rookie season.

Men's Bball Suffers 1st Lose, Prepares for Winona
12/01/2009 - 12:00 PM

Matt Schneck's straight fourth double-double wasn't enough for the Huskey Men's Basketball team as they suffered their first defeat on the young season this last weekend. After a 66-54 win over the University of Mary in the first game of the Holiday Hoopsfest the Huskies feel 89-80 to Augustana. Schneck scored 21 and Taylor Witt added 24 but it was not enough as the Vikings scored their last 15 points from the line to improve their record to 5-0. The Huskies who have been ranked in the top 10 in the nation throughout the first part of the year fall to 3-1.
St.Cloud will begin the conference season this Friday against rival Winona State and then continue the NSIC schedule on Saturday versus Upper Iowa. The Huskies beat the Warriors in all three meetings last year including a first round victory in the NSIC Tournament. St.Cloud was ranked 9th in last week's national poll while Winona checked in at 14th. Games are slated to start at 8pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturday with KVSC providing coverage this Friday for both the Men's and Women's games against Winona.
Women's Basketball Goes 1-1 at Hoopsfest
11/30/2009 - 11:22 AM

It was an up and down weekend for the Saint Cloud State women’s basketball team as they went 1-1 at the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Huskies sweep Brown
11/30/2009 - 10:30 AM

It was a very successful trip out east for the Saint Cloud State women’s hockey team as they increased their win streak to three by sweeping the Brown Bears in Providence, Rhode Island. Friday afternoon’s matchup saw a 5-4 Husky win in which Caitlin Hogan took no time in registering her 100th career point as she opened up the scoring with a power play goal just five minutes into the game. The senior from Oakdale is the 2nd player in SCSU women’s hockey history to reach the milestone; she trails only Roxy Stang on the career scoring chart. Hogan finished the game with a goal and two assists.
Saturday the Huskies completed the sweep of Brown with a 3-2 comeback victory. Senior captain Felicia Nelson netted the game winner for the Huskies; she also had the game winner in Friday’s game. Ashley Nixon was the goalie of record for SCSU, recording 25 of 27 saves in the win. The Huskies will take on Minnesota State-Mankato this weekend in a home and home series. Huskies Spilt with #2 Pioneers
11/29/2009 - 11:35 AM

It was the same storyline for the Huskey Men's Hockey team this weekend and it ended up being the same ending. For the second time in three weeks, the Huskies went on the road to face a WCHA opponent that was ranked second in the nation and for the second time they came away with two points after a Saturday victory.
Two weeks ago the Huskies lost by two goals in game one to #2 North Dakota but won the second game by a goal to earn a spilt. This weekend the Huskies went on the road to play #2 Denver and after a Friday lose by the score of 5-3, the Huskies rebounded with a 3-2 win to earn two points on the weekend.
Ryan Lasch had goals in each game this weekend to extend his point streak to six games while Tony Mosey collected two goals on Saturday (and game winner) to push the Huskies pass another ranked team.
Mike Lee got the start on Friday night and made 24 saves on 29 shots while Dan Dunn allowed two goals on 28 shots.
The Huskies are now through the half way point of a tough five-series stretch that has seen them play three ranked opponents and will play another in two weeks at home in Colorado College. Up next for the Huskies that are currently in a three way tie for 4th place in the WCHA, is a trip up to Anchorage, Alaska to play the Seawolves in more conference action this weekend.

The loss put the Huskies at 1-1 on the weekend, as they defeated Waldorf College on Friday 90-73. The Huskies were led on the weekend by junior guard Talisha Barlow. The explosive Barlow averaged just over 24 points and four steals in the two games.
SCSU plays in the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest this weekend in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, taking on the University of Mary and Augustana College.
